What is air tightness testing?

Air tightness testing (also known as air pressure, air permeability or air leakage testing) is an essential new requirement for building regulations for most new houses in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

By calculating the amount of air pressure lost through the building fabric, air testing helps builders and developers to deliver buildings that are more cost effective, energy efficient and ultimately, better for the environment.

Air tightness testing is an initiative driven by the government to reduce carbon emissions by more than the figures agreed as part of the Kyoto agreement.

How do you test a buildings air tightness?

Air tightness testing is done by attaching a fan to an external door (sealing the opening) to pressurise or de-pressurise the building. All external openings such as doors, windows and vents are closed and sealed, then the building is pressurised or depressurised. By measuring internal and external air pressures at different fan speeds our qualified engineers can calculate how much air flow,is being lost through the building fabric

Our result is then compared against the DAP (Design Air Permeability) from the buildings SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) calculation, if our result is less or equal to the DAP then it has successfully passed the test.

Every project is important to us. Regardless of its size and scope

Flexible and dedicated
